The best time to install a fence in Ontario is from spring to fall, once the ground has thawed. The best time to book it is earlier: late winter or early spring, before the busy season fills the calendar. Here’s how the year looks from the crew’s side, and how to plan so your fence is up when you actually need it.

The Short Answer

We build fences from spring through fall. Frozen ground, snow and freezing temperatures make winter a poor time to set posts, so most homeowners use the winter to plan and get a quote, then build as soon as the ground allows.

If you want a fence by May or June — for a new puppy, a pool season or simply a private backyard for summer — ask for your quote in February or March.

Why Winter Doesn’t Work for Fence Posts

A fence is only as straight as its posts. In Ontario, posts need to sit below the frost line so the spring thaw doesn’t push them out of the ground. In winter that’s exactly the problem:

  • Frozen ground is slow and hard to dig, and the hole walls can’t be checked properly.
  • Footings need the ground to cooperate. Setting posts in frozen soil is asking for weak, heaving posts.
  • Snow hides the yard. Grade changes, property pins and old footings are hard to see, and locate paint doesn’t show well on snow.

So we don’t build in the depths of winter. It’s not worth a fence that leans after the first thaw.

Spring: the Busiest Season

As soon as the ground thaws, everyone wants a fence at once. Spring is a great time to build — the soil is workable and you get the whole summer to enjoy the result — but it’s also when install dates go fastest. If you wait until the first warm weekend to call, expect to wait longer for a date.

Spring rain can also move dates. We don’t dig in heavy rain, because a muddy hole and a soaked yard make for poor footings and a damaged lawn. A day or two of shuffling is normal in April and May.

Summer: Dry Ground and Long Days

Summer is good building weather. The ground is dry, the days are long and a crew can install up to 150 ft of fence in a day. Most backyard fences take one to two days on site. The main thing to plan around is the backyard itself: if you have a garden or landscaping along the fence line, it’s easier to move plants before the season is in full swing.

Fall: an Underrated Time to Build

September and October are some of the best months for a fence. It’s cooler for the crew, the ground is still soft enough to dig, and the spring rush is over. A fence built in the fall goes through its first winter already standing, and your yard is ready the moment spring arrives.

A Simple Timeline for a Spring Fence

When What to do
January–February Decide on height, style and material. Find your survey. Check your city’s fence rules. Talk to your neighbour about any shared section.
February–March Book a free on-site quote. Approve the price and pick an install date.
About 1–2 weeks before We request Ontario One Call locates so buried lines are marked before anyone digs. Allow about five business days.
Build days Clear the fence line and make sure the crew can reach the backyard. Most fences are done in one to two days.
Done Walk the fence with us. You pay once it’s finished.

Not sure about the rules? We collected the official fence by-law pages for Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Welland and Thorold in our Niagara fence rules guide.

What Can Move Your Install Date

  • Weather. Heavy rain or a late frost can push digging by a day or two.
  • Locates. We can’t dig until gas, hydro and cable lines are marked.
  • Permits. A pool enclosure or a fence beyond your city’s standard rules may need a permit first.
  • Your neighbour. If a fence is shared, agree on it before the crew arrives — see who pays for a fence between neighbours.

We build across the GTA and Niagara, from St. Catharines and Niagara Falls to Oakville, Mississauga and Toronto. See what we’ve built lately on our projects page.

FAQ

Can you install a fence in winter in Ontario?

Rarely. Frozen ground and freezing temperatures make it hard to set posts properly below the frost line, so we build from spring through fall. Winter is the right time to plan and get a quote.

How far ahead should I book a fence for spring?

Ask for a quote in February or March. Spring install dates fill first, and booking early gives time for locates and any permits.

How long does fence installation take?

Most backyard fences take one to two days on site. A crew can install up to 150 ft of fence in a day, depending on the yard.

Is fall a good time to build a fence?

Yes. The ground is still workable, it is cooler, and the spring rush is over. Your fence is ready as soon as spring comes.
