A good privacy fence turns a backyard into a space you actually use. Here are the five styles we build most often for homeowners in Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Welland and Thorold — and who each one suits best.

1. Full Privacy (Basic Privacy)

Solid vertical boards set tight with no gaps. It’s the simplest, most affordable way to block the view completely. A good choice for close neighbours and smaller lots.

2. Shadow Box

Boards alternate from one side of the rails to the other. From straight on it looks solid, but air can pass through, which helps on windy lots. It also looks finished from both sides — your neighbour will thank you.

3. Board-on-Board

Overlapping boards that close the gaps completely while keeping a textured look. It’s a step up from basic privacy and stays private even as the wood dries and shrinks.

4. Lattice Top

A privacy fence finished with a decorative lattice panel on top. It adds height and a lighter look along the property line — popular in older neighbourhoods.

5. Composite

Horizontal composite boards with aluminum posts. Fully private, modern and maintenance-free. Read our wood vs composite comparison.

Don’t Forget the Gate

The gate is the part of the fence you use every day. A header beam on top keeps a wide gate from sagging, and decorative inserts can make it the feature of the yard — see the double gate we built in St. Catharines.

Height and Local Rules

Privacy depends on height, but height is regulated by your city. Before you choose, read what to check in Niagara fence by-laws — we also check the rules for your property before we build.
