Fence prices in the GTA are quoted per linear foot. The number you see online is only a starting point; Toronto backyards in particular come with narrow side yards, slopes and old fences that change the total. Here’s how pricing works, with examples from fences we’ve built across Toronto and the GTA.
The Short Answer
As of 2026, our pressure-treated wood fences start from $55 per linear foot installed and cedar from $67. That includes materials, posts set below the frost line with protection at ground level, labour and clean-up. Composite is quoted per project. Gates and extras are added to the total.
Quick Estimate by Length
| Fence length | Pressure-treated, from | Cedar, from |
|---|---|---|
| 50 ft / 15 m | $2,750 | $3,350 |
| 100 ft / 30 m | $5,500 | $6,700 |
| 150 ft / 46 m | $8,250 | $10,050 |
These are starting prices for a straight run, before gates, old fence removal and site work. Prices can change from season to season, so the exact number comes from a free on-site quote.
What Changes the Price in the GTA
Narrow side yards and access
Many Toronto lots have tight side yards or a single narrow path to the backyard. Everything — posts, rails, boards — has to be carried in by hand. It’s doable; it just takes longer than a wide-open suburban yard.
Slopes and grade changes
When one yard sits higher than the next, the fence has to step down the slope, and sometimes the soil needs holding back. On a backyard in Scarborough, the yard was higher than the neighbour’s side, so we built a wood retaining wall along the bottom of the fence and added insulation and a membrane where the wood touches the ground. That’s the spot that usually rots first, so it was worth protecting.
Old fence removal
Most GTA jobs replace an existing fence. Removing it, pulling old concrete footings and hauling it away is part of the quote — make sure it’s listed in yours.
Trees and roots
Mature trees are part of what makes older neighbourhoods beautiful. A fence line often has to work around a trunk or big roots. In East York, the fence runs along a sloped side yard and past a mature tree.
Height, style and gates
Taller fences and styles with more boards, like board-on-board or shadow-box, use more material. Every gate needs its own frame and hardware; a double gate costs more than a single one.
Material
Pressure-treated wood is the budget-friendly option. Cedar costs more for its natural rot resistance and look. Composite costs the most up front but needs no staining — like this composite fence and gate in Toronto.
How to Compare Fence Quotes
- Is the price per foot installed, or materials only?
- How deep are the posts, and how are they protected at the ground line?
- Is old fence removal included, along with hauling away the debris?
- Are gates priced separately?
- Is there a deposit? We don’t take one — you pay once the fence is finished.
